History:

It is believed that Juan Ponce de Leon discovered Sanibel Island, and named it after Queen Isabella “Santa Isybella”. However he was out-battled by the native Calusa Indians and died in Cuba, after retreating in 1523.

Legend has it that Jose Gaspar, buried his treasure on Captiva Island. He is also said to have held his female prisoners captive here, hence Captiva.
