Things to Do on A Rainy Day in Sanibel

Added: Mar 04, 2022
Category: Things to Do

Even on sunny Sanibel Island, you’ll experience a rainy day or two. On average, we get 54 inches of rain annually, with June being our wettest month. During the summer, this means lots of thunderstorms, however, they usually pass quickly. With that being said, it’s probably best to prepare a list of indoor activities just in case. Just remember: if unwanted showers happen to fall during your vacation, it doesn’t have to be a downer. There is plenty to do on the island, even when the weather doesn’t warrant a day at the beach. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Things to Do on A Rainy Day in Sanibel

Visit Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum

This isn’t just another museum. The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum is the only museum in the U.S. that’s solely dedicated to shells. With over 30 permanent exhibits and several temporary displays, it’s incredibly easy to spend the whole day there. Don’t forget to check out the Hall of Shells, which is home to over 500,000 unique shells!

The museum is open daily from 10AM-5PM.

Admission costs:

Adult (18+): $23.95

Youth (12-17): $14.95

Child (5-11): $8.95

Under 5: FREE

Check out Sanibel’s Big Arts Center

The "Big Arts" Center celebrates the island's diverse and vibrant artistic community. The center offers a wide variety of entertainment, arts and education programs for island residents and visitors alike. These include arts and enrichment workshops, discussion panels, and performing arts presentations devoted to music, theater, and dance. Visit their calendar here to see what events are set to take place during your visit to Sanibel.

Tickets range in price depending on your chosen event.

Plan Your Own Self-Guided Food Tour

There are countless restaurants to choose from on Sanibel Island. In fact, you can make a whole day out of exploring the local food scene. If you wake up to rain during your vacation, why not drive around town and go food-hopping? Start off with snacks and appetizers at Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille, then make your way over to Paper Fig Kitchen for a shrimp po-boy and a glass of fresh lemonade. For dessert, we’d recommend Sanibel’s Best Homemade Ice Cream, Pinnochio’s Italian Ice, or the bakery at Bailey’s General Store. Feeling more adventurous? You can customize your tour however you’d like. Just remember to order an Uber if you plan on drinking a few cocktails!
